Overview
Thioacetazone is an an anti tuberculous agent and is used to treat tuberculosis (T.B), as an alternative para-aminosalicylic acid.
Indications
Thioacetazone is primarily indicated in conditions like Acute leukemia, Tuberculosis.
Contraindications
Thioacetazone is contraindicated in conditions like Hepatic failure.
Side Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Thioacetazone, which give rise to further complications include Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Thrombocytopenia, Abdominal pain, Agranulocytosis, Anemia. Thiaocetazone produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Stevens Johnson syndrome, Toxic epidermal necrolysis. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Thioacetazone therapy. The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Thioacetazone are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Ataxia, Blurred vision, Vertigo, Seizures and convulsions, Salivation, Deafness, Epilepsy, Cerebral edema.
Warnings
It is very important that your doctor or health care worker check your progress at regular visits. Tell your doctor immediately if blurred vision or loss of vision, with or without eye pain, occurs during treatment . Liver problems may be more likely to occur if you drink alcoholic beverages regularly while you are taking this medicine. Also, the regular use of alcohol may keep this medicine from working properly. Therefore, you should strictly limit the amount of alcoholic beverages you drink while you are taking this medicine. This medicine may cause a very serious rash in any patient, but it occurs more often in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. If you notice a rash, stop taking this medicine and see your health care worker immediately.
High Risk Groups
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, and Neonates. If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
