Ursodeoxycholic Acid

Ursodeoxycholic Acid is a secondary bile acid formed in the intestine. Ursodeoxycholic Acid is the 7-ß-hydroxy epimer of chenodiol (chenodeoxycholic acid). Chemically Ursodeoxycholic Acid is identified as 3a, 7ß-dihydroxy-5ß-cholan-24-oic acid. Ursodeoxycholic Acid is choleretic and decreases the concentration of cholesterol in bile. Ursodeoxycholic Acid is used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones, also effective for the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis.

Ursodeoxycholic Acid is primarily indicated in conditions like Cholesterol gall stones, Dissolution of gallstones, Prevention of gall stone, Primary biliary cirrhosis, Niemann-pick disease, Iron-deficiency anemia with chronic renal failure.

Ursodeoxycholic Acid is contraindicated in conditions like Calcified gallstones, Non-functioning gallbladders, Pigment gallstone.

The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Ursodeoxycholic Acid are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Dizziness, Diarrhea, Dyspepsia, Nausea and vomiting, Back pain, Upper respiratory tract infection, Alopecia, Rash, Hyperglycemia, Flatulence, Peptic ulcer, UTI, Leukopenia, Abdominal pain, Pruritus, Angioedema, Peripheral edema, Biliary pain.

Ursodeoxycholic acid should not be administered to patients with chronic liver disease, peptic ulcer or inflammatory bowel disease. Its use should be avoided in pregnancy.

Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Liver Malfunction, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
