Read the Active Ingredient, Not Just the Brand Name

Start with the ingredient

A brand name is not a complete description of a medicine. Products with similar names can contain different ingredients. Check the active ingredient and strength each time, especially when buying a different version of a familiar product.

Read beyond the front of the box

  • Look for the active ingredient and the amount per tablet or measured volume.
  • Check what the product is intended for.
  • Read warnings, directions and storage instructions.
  • Check the expiry date and any instructions after opening.

Compare combination products

Cold, flu and pain products may contain more than one medicine. Ask a pharmacist to compare ingredients before combining them with another product. Different packaging does not mean the ingredients are different.

Apply the local label

The FDA reference describes the US Drug Facts format. Packaging in Pakistan may use a different layout; follow the supplied local leaflet and pharmacist's advice. If information is missing or unreadable, obtain clarification before use. This checklist cannot determine the right medicine or dose for an individual.
