It is a condition characterized by retrograde blood flow into the left atrium during systole due to posterior bulging of anterior and posterior mitral leaflets into left atrium
Clinical presentation (4ps)
- Pain (atypical chest pain) - is the most common symptom.
- Palpitations
- Panic attacks
- High - Pitched. Mid - systolic click - is the most common sign.
Investigations
Echocardiography is investigation of choice. Mitral valve prolapse is often associated with aortic root disease, and any evidence for a dilated aorta by chest radiography should prompt either CT or MRI angiography.
Management
- Atypical chest pain and palpitations - beta blockers
- MVP + MR + AF- anticoagulation
- MVP + Severe MR - surgical repair (due to risk of sudden death).
