Clinical features
- Sore throat, cough, croup
- Mild course
- Respiratory distress unusual
Treatment
- IVF: Isolyte-P maintenance
- Complete bedrest
- O2 for hypoxia
- Intubation when respiratory distress increases
- Drugs not useful
Acute Bronchitis
- Usually does not exist as such in children as in adults. But seen associated with other conditions like asthmatic bronchitis and bronchiolitis
Clinical Features
- History of preceding URI
- Hacking unproductive cough
- Chest pain
On Examination
- Whistling sound during respiration
- Signs of nasopharyngitis
- Rhinitis and conjunctivitis
- Bilateral wheeze
Treatment
- No specific treatment
- Frequent shift of position
- Judicious use of cough suppressants
- Antihistamines are contraindicated (Note: When repeated attacks occur investigate for congenital anomalies of respiratory tract, foreign body aspiration, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis, etc.
