Acute Uvulitis

Etiology
Gp A Streptococcal in >5 year age group
- H.influenzae in <5 years of age.
Clinical Features
Throat pain, drooling of saliva, fever.
Treatment
Penicillin 1 lakh unit/kg/d OR
- Chloramphenicol 50 mg/kg/d × 5-7 days.
Retropharyngeal Abscess
Develops in the space between prevertebral fascia and posterior pharyngeal wall.
Clinical Features
Abrupt onset with high fever, feeding problems and refusal to feed, dysphagia, neck kept in extension.
On Examination
A bulge on the posterior pharyngeal wall.
Investigation X-ray of neck lateral view: Reveals a retropharyngeal mass
Treatment
In the prefluctuant stage:
- Penicillin 1 lakh unit/kg/d OR
- Ampicillin + Sulbactum In fluctuant stage: Incision and drainage under GA and antibiotics.
