Introduction
It is so called because the primary disturbance is that of affect viz. emotion or mood. The disturbance may either be qualitative or quantitative. They are characteristically episodic and during the period between two episodes the patient is absolutely normal. There can be episodes of depression recurring or less commonly mania or mania and depression alternating.
