Round Orders

Round orders are the instructions given during a ward round for the management of patients.

Types of Orders

1. Routine Orders

  • Regular medications and their timing
  • Diet and fluid restrictions
  • Nursing care instructions
  • Physiotherapy or mobilization
  • 2. PRN Orders (As Needed)

  • Medications to be given when specific conditions occur
  • Must specify: drug name, dose, route, frequency, and indication
  • Example: "Inj. Morphine 2-4 mg IV q4h PRN severe pain"
  • 3. STAT Orders

  • Single dose to be given immediately
  • Used for urgent situations
  • 4. Investigative Orders

  • Lab tests, imaging studies, procedures
  • Include specific instructions (e.g., fasting, contrast)
  • Writing Orders Properly

  • Use clear, legible handwriting (or electronic system)
  • Include: date, time, order, and your signature
  • Avoid abbreviations that can be misunderstood
  • Review and renew orders regularly
