Ward Rounds

The ward round is a fundamental part of clinical medicine. Here's how to prepare and conduct yourself effectively:

Before the Round

  • Get a ballpoint pen, stethoscope, BP apparatus, and a small writing pad
  • In medical wards, keep a hammer and a pen torch as well
  • Wear an overall as per the ward's particular routine
  • Know your allotted beds and patients
  • Find out who your PGR (Post Graduate Resident/Registrar) is
  • Check the progress of your patients before the round
  • During the Round

  • Present your patients clearly and concisely
  • Have all investigation reports ready
  • Note down all orders and changes in management
  • Ask questions if you are unsure about any instruction
  • After the Round

  • Implement all orders promptly
  • Update patient charts
  • Follow up on any new investigations ordered
