Ascariasis is a type of roundworm infection. These worms are parasites that use your body as a host to mature from larvae or eggs to adult worms. Adult worms, which reproduce, can be more than a foot (30 centimeters) long.
Clinical features
Fever, dyspnea, wheezing, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, tingling throat, passage of worms (from mouth, nares, anus), dry cough.
Management
Tab/Syp Albendazole (Zentel) 400mg PO as a single dose OR
Tab/syp Mebendazole (Vermox) 500mg PO Stat or 100mg 1TSF/tab PO BD for three days
Tab/syp Ketress (levamisole) 40mg PO a single dose
These drugs are safe for children above 1 year of age and in pregnancy, although use in 1st trimester is best avoided
Last supportive therapy and supplementation.
