Stomatitis (Mouth and Lips Swelling)

- Give oral hygiene instructions and advise regular tooth brushing.
- Oral rinse with 3% Hydrogen peroxide three times a day.
- Tab-Inflamatax (Flurbiprofen) 100mg or Brufen (Ibuprofen) 400mg or Ponstan forte (mefenamic acid) 500mg 1 tab PO x TDS
- Treat the cause. For example
- Oral Candidiasis: Cap- Flucon 1 Diflucon (fluconazole) 100mg, OD y for 7 days

Tab- Conaz(ketoconazole) 200-400mg, OD with breakfast [requires acidic gastric environment for absorption] for 7-14 days.

Nilstat (nystatin) mouth rinses (500,000 units [5 mL of 100,000 unitsimL] held in the mouth before swallowing three times daily).
- Oral herpes: Tab/Syp- Acylex (acyclovir) 200-400mg PO x QID.
- Scurvy (vitamin C deficiency): Tab- ascorbic acid 100mg 1 tab PO x OD.
- Other vitamins and nutrient deficiency can also cause Stomatitis. Give the corresponding vitamins at curative doses. Multivitamins are insufficient to treat true vitamin deficiencies.
- If there is oral ulceration with infection also give Tab- Augmentin/Amclave (Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid)625mg 1 tab PO x TDS for five days.
Tab-Flagyl (metronidazole) 400mg 1 tab PO x TDS for five days.
