- When patient is debilitated and cannot spontaneously expectorate sputum
- When sputum samples have failed to recover causative agent
- When anaerobic infection is suspected. Other representative specimens in deep pulmonary infection include:
- Transbronchial biopsy
- Bronchoalveolar lavage
- Bronchial brush technique.
