  • When patient is debilitated and cannot spontaneously expectorate sputum
  • When sputum samples have failed to recover causative agent
  • When anaerobic infection is suspected. Other representative specimens in deep pulmonary infection include:
  • Transbronchial biopsy
  • Bronchoalveolar lavage
  • Bronchial brush technique.
