First control with proper diet and exercise, if not controlled then prescribe medicines.

A: Obese diabetic: Tab Metformin (Glucophage) 500mg, 1xBD

B: Normal body weight diabetic: Tab (Glimperide (Getryl) 4mg, 1xOD, Tab Sitagliptim (Sita) 50mg, 1xBD, Tab Glibenclamide (Diabeta) 15mg, ½ tab OD.

C: Still not controlled with these drugs then start insulin therapy:

How to calculate dose of insulin:

If 1st time prescription: Body weight x 0.3= Total units’ insulin out of this calculated dose 2/3rd is given at morning and 2/3rd is given at evening.

If already using insulin and you are prescribing for 2nd time then

Total dose: Weight of body x 0.5= total insulin units.

Insulin indications

  1. Type-I DM
  2. Type-II not responding to pharmacological therapy
  3. Type-II with organ failure
  4. D.K.A
  5. HONK
  6. Increased potassium level
